Tennis court dimensions

Doubles, singles, service boxes, net heights — and the full pad size that makes a court actually playable.

A tennis court is 78 feet long, and 36 feet wide for doubles or 27 feet for singles — the outer tramlines are doubles alleys. The net stands 42 inches at the posts and 36 inches at center. Service boxes run 21 feet from the net.

Why the pad is nearly double the lines

Players need 21 feet behind each baseline and 12 feet beside each sideline for real play — that's how a 78' × 36' court becomes a 60' × 120' pad. Skimp on run-back and the court plays cramped forever. One tennis pad also converts cleanly to four pickleball courts — see the conversion guide and the resurfacing guide for what that costs.
